Peakhill Farm's SaladI have a love/hate relationship with my salad. I love growing it. I love eating it but I hate the amount of time it takes picking, bagging & delivering it. But althought I say, 'NO MORE!', at the end of every season, yes, I will be growing it again in 2011. The secret of good salad is good flavour and where does the flavour come from? The stalk! Leaves are just the plants factory floor where it converts sunlight and C02 into sugars. It's the stalk where all these sugars are stored and that's why I always include stalk as well as leaf in my salad. The salad is grown slowly, we use minimal amounts of water which we harvest from rainwater captured from our farm building roofs. This helps the leaf stay fresh much longer than mass produced forced supermarket salad. I pick it early in the morning before the sun heats it up and then pack it bio degradable packaging. I deliver it to farm shops and restaurants within a 10 mile radius of the farm. But if your hosting a special occasion, or even if you just eat a lot of salad, then the most economical way to buy is in bulk at £11.50 per kg. If you don't live near by then we can always get it to you by post (if the postman can resist a little nibble, poor postie). Note, my salad lasts for a week in a fridge but if it wilts, just soak it in some cold water and it should recover. |
